Black on Maroon - Mark Rothko
I saw the series of Black on Maroon at Tate Modern a couple years ago. Before that I did not understand how one could have so much emotions over these paintings by Mark Rothko. After seeing these in person, I kind of got the idea. The series were put in a small room of dimmed lights. I sat on the bench and stared at these huge pieces of window-like gloomy colors for a few minutes. I figured it might be the scale of the paintings, the use of colors and the environment that make the viewers emotional. It gives you the feeling that you are trapped in a room of darkness, suffocated and depressed.
